Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up to create a new mobile app developers' programme at Aalto University in Finland.
The two companies are investing around £15 million into The App Campus. Starting in May 2012, the programme is hoped will "foster the creation of innovative mobile applications for the Windows Phone ecosystem, and in addition, Nokia platforms, including Symbian and Series 40", they said in a statement.
Applications are now open with successful participants being promised "comprehensive support [from mentors in the industry], training in mobile technology, design and usability, and funding to create innovative new mobile apps and services".
The programme was launched by the Finnish prime minister, Jyrki Katainen, at an event in Helsinki and he described the partnership between Microsoft and Nokia as "a critical investment in this growing ecosystem".
It will be managed by the the Aalto University Center for Entrepreneurship, which filed 20 patents last year and lists Stanford University among its partners. The centre's head, Will Cardwell, said: "The people and ideas we work with hail from all corners of the world, and our partnership with Microsoft and Nokia will further strengthen our global network. This program will provide a unique opportunity to turn application ideas into real business with the support of world- class partners and coaches."
The university is also behind the Aalto Venture Garage, which is "a co-working space for hackers and startups from all across the Nordics and Baltics" and which is behind the Startup Sauna, a non-profit seed accelerator programme. So if you have a smart idea, perhaps you should pack your bags for Finland?
