Charu KhandalOne of the key members of the animation team that added the special effects in Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan starrer RA.ONE, Charu Khandal was seriously injured when the auto rickshaw in which she was travelling was hammered by a speeding Honda City car in the wee hours of Sunday at Mumbai's Oshiwara area.
The accident occurred at around 1 am on Sunday, media reports said. National Award winning Khandal, who is now battling for life, was returning home with her sister Ritu and friend Vikrant Goyal.
The 28-year-old animator has reportedly suffered multiple fractures in her legs and spine. The swelling in her spinal cord is preventing doctors from conducting any surgery, reports said. According to reports, Khandal's sister and friend also suffered serious injuries. Khandal and others were taken to a private hospital immediately after the accident.
Meanwhile, the Bollywood fraternity is worried over the injury of Charu Khandal. Anubhav Sinha, director of RA.ONE, said he is extremely saddened by the incident.
According to India Today, Doctors at the Kokilaben Ambani hospital, where Khandal was admitted, said she has suffered multiple fractures in her head, ribs and spine -including her cervical bone, neck and legs.
Even if she survives, she wouldn’t be able to lead a normal life, they added.
India Today also quotes one of Khandal’s friends as saying, “ We are told that her injuries are very severe and could result in complete paralysis even if she pulls through. Clearly, this is not what anyone would ever want to suffer.” Khandal’s friend Goyal, who works as an assistant sales manager in Pride International, was also critical but has now regained consciousness. Khandal’s sister has also sustained severe injuries.
The 28- year- old, however, remains in a state of coma. Doctors have so far refrained from operating upon her.
Family and friends are extremely upset over the slack driver being given bail.
A friend said: “ This is how our system works. Here a young, bubbly girl has been maimed forever and the culprit who did this to her gets bail to go out and ruin another life on another drunk Saturday night. Such people, who drive under the influence of alcohol, must be treated as murderers because they know very well that they are endangering people’s lives.” Khandal’s friends are of the view that Netrapal has somehow influenced the case. They allege that the police have refused to share details of the blood report with her family and friends, and have instead said they have not received them yet.

“ I believe this guy is influential or related to someone influential who does not want to get trapped. We are not even sure if they did test his blood properly or have already created a loop- hole so that he could get away later,” a friend said.
Senior inspector Dilip Rupwate of Oshiwara police station refused to comment on the allegations levelled against the police by Khandal’s friends and said, “ We have found alcohol in the driver’s blood but the court has granted the accused bail in accordance with the law.
