Nokia Lumia 900 Delivers Solid Performance, Despite Glitches
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:27 AM
News Analysis: Nokia's Lumia 900 made a very strong start out of the gate despite the fact that AT&T began sales on the Easter holiday when most stores were closed. The device jumped immediately to the top of Amazons wireless best-seller charts, with the black version of the phone being the No. 1 seller and the cyan model in second place during the first week of sales.   -  The strong early sales performance of Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphone shouldn't be surprising despite gloomy initial forecasts by industry analysts. Nokia Lumia 900: Taking a Close Look Inside and Out
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:45 AM
The just-released Nokia Lumia 900 phone uses Windows Phone 7.5, which has shown to be a slick, easy-to-use interface. With the larger phone, its even easier to use. The device is thin, but the screen is larger than an iPhone, and its slightly thicker and a little heavier. But its a well-designed, easy-to-use device that fits nicely into a shirt pocket. This phone has had a lot of hype about its 8-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, but as youll see in these photos, it doesnt deliver on that hype. On the other hand, it carries with it an air of mystery& the controls are unlabeled. Note that because the Zeiss lens had so much hype, I decided to do a comparison test to see if the vaunted multi-element lens was as good as Nokia said it is. The comparison photos were shot using the Nokia 900, a BlackBerry Bold 9900 with a 5-MP camera and a Nikon D70 DSLR with a 6-MP camera. As you will see, the number of megapixels is fairly meaningless if the lens is awful and the camera is worse.   -  ...

Flashback Trojan: Kaspersky's 10 Ways to Protect Your Mac
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 11:45 PM
Costin Raiu, a security expert with Kaspersky Lab, points to a 2006 commercial that showed a sick PC and a healthy Mac as the key contributor to the belief that Apples Mac computers dont get viruses. That idea has been shattered following a series of cyber-attacks on the Apple systems over the past year, including the Tsunami and Revier/Imuler Trojans and the Mac Defender fake antivirus program. Most recently it has been the rejuvenated and reworked Flashback Trojan, which security researchers from Kaspersky and another security firm, Doctor Web, said has infected more than 600,000 Macs worldwide since about mid-March. Thats about 1 to 2 percent of all Macs being used, a percentage that puts the infection into the realm of the Conficker malware that attacked Windows PCs. Given this, Mac users need to take a serious look at the security measures theyre taking, according to Raiu. Here he lists the top 10 steps they can take to ensure their Macs are as secure and safe as possible.   -  ...
