The new iPad's high-definition screen is a "real leap forward", a leading New Zealand apps developer says.
The latest version of the popular tablet device, launched by Apple yesterday, will feature a high-definition "retina" display and will work on faster 4G cellular networks as well as 3G that is used in New Zealand.
It will go on sale in New Zealand on March 23.
Reuben Bijl, director of technology for Christchurch developer Smudge Apps, said the screen was a huge improvement.
"The screen is the iPad. Increasing the quality of the screen that much really is a massive difference," Bijl said.
"Adding four times as many pixels really is profound and different." New Zealand pricing has not yet been confirmed, but prices in the United States start at about $NZ600.
The new iPad also has a new iSight 5 mega pixel camera on the back, as well as the ability to record 1080p high-definition video.
Its battery will have a 10-hour life, or nine hours on 4G, before it needs to be charged, the company says.
Apple has also cut the price of the iPad 2 16-gigabyte models on its New Zealand website.
An employee at Yobbee's store in the Re:Start Mall said the device would officially go on sale on March 23.
"We're not sure if we'll have launch-day stock on that day either.
"It's up to Apple," the employee said.
Yobbee's has two stores in Christchurch, and both are authorised Apple resellers.
Apple enthusiast Peter Fitchett, of Christchurch, said the new device was impressive.
Fitchett is a committee member for the Apple Users Group of Canterbury.
He uses a Mac, but not an iPhone or an iPad.
"I'm thinking about getting one [an iPad]. If I was getting one, I'd get the latest one - a better screen and a bit faster," he said.
