Ultrafast broadband priced from $75

New Zealand-owned internet service provider Orcon has started to sell ultra-fast broadband.
Orcon Chief Executive Scott Bartlett announced this morning ultra-fast broadband would be available for home, businesses and schools.

Auckland, Wellington, Whangarei, Rotorua, Palmerston North and Blenheim can start signing up for fibre, he said.
Customers can find out when fibre will reach their houses on the Orcon website.
Bartlett said an entry level service would cost the same as copper, at $75 for 30Mbit/s down, 10Mbit/s up with a 30GB cap.
Fibre for businesses will start at $169 plus GST.
Ultra-fast broadband is capable of delivering data download speeds around 60 times faster than DSL (digital subscriber line) speeds obtainable over existing copper phone lines, according to Bartlett.
The network, due to be finished by 2020, will allow customers to download from the internet of either 30 megabits per second or 100Mps.
In July of last year, Bartlett announced an internet phone called Orcon Genius, which would offer packages costing $70 a month.
Armed for business
Bartlett said Kiwi businesses will be better armed to compete in the global economy with ultrafast broadband.
"In the US and UK, it's estimated up to a third of internet traffic is through users accessing online video and entertainment services. Fibre ensures these services can be enjoyed without delays or interruptions," he said.
He said it would also open up opportunities for education and health care.
"Applications such as remote teaching, online medical care and remote patient monitoring become an effective reality," said Bartlett.
